Defining the relationship between tech and society

We're looking for a Director of Policy and Advocacy to engage the technology industry, government, and the public to craft and promote a pro-democracy platform focused on ethical tech, civic responsibility, and defending the integrity of public discourse. Reporting to our CEO, you'll lead the policy work of Data for Democracy, a volunteer tech collective aligned with New Knowledge's mission, and craft policy positions from the perspective of people who build tech everyday. You'll advocate for Data for Democracy and its policy positions by forming partnerships with mission-driven organizations, technology companies, and civic institutions.


  • Monitoring and analyzing relevant activity on Capitol Hill, in the executive branch, and in peer organizations at the national level
  • Providing strategic analysis and background for the development of Data for Democracy's annual policy agenda
  • Developing and implementing strategy for advancing policy goals with key decision-makers in the legislative and executive branches
  • Promoting the use of Data for Democracy research in policy analysis and development
  • Developing policy proposals and advocating them individually and in conjunction with allies
  • Communicating with and briefing senior tech executives, along with members of Congress, their staff and agency officials through in-person meetings, written communications, and phone calls
  • Cultivating a national network of partners and allies on policy matters
  • Participating in social media activities


  • We encourage you to apply even if you don't have all of these qualifications (i.e., we're open to you convincing us you can do the job, even if you haven't done this before)
  • You have a demonstrated ability to take on a complex project without an obvious roadmap and make it successful
  • A minimum of five years of advocacy experience at the national level
  • A passion for technology, even if it hasn't been your policy focus
  • Experience in and comfort communicating with corporate executives, along with high level policy-makers and staff
  • Ability to use data in shaping policy messages
  • Experience in coalition-building and working in a team environment
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly in writing and in oral presentations to a range of audiences
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
