Community Manager

Support a community of 2,000 data scientists, technologists, and activists

We're looking for a passionate community manager to support the amazing volunteers in Data for Democracy, a volunteer tech collective aligned with New Knowledge's mission of defending the integrity of public discourse. This grassroots community with over 2,000 members is part open source, part open data science, and part civic tech. You'll be the point person helping new volunteers get connected to active projects that pique their interest, supporting partner organizations like the City of Boston, and showcasing the amazing work of volunteers on social media and the Data for Democracy blog. You'll take the lead on finding new ways to help the community run smoothly and have the greatest impact.

Day to day, you'll:

  • Establish and reinforce the community norm that D4D is open, inclusive, and is a place where everyone to be involved
  • Maintain a list of active projects, and the skill sets they need in volunteers
  • Help new volunteers get connected with active projects that sync with their skills and interests
  • Update the community about what's going on in each active project every week
  • Highlight the community’s accomplishments to the public on our blog and social media
  • Connect partner organizations with volunteers who have or want management experience, and the time to lead projects that support the partner’s mission

You'll get support from all of the above from a core group of volunteers who have stepped up to manage the community on a day-to-day basis.

In general, you:

  • Apply to jobs even when you don't meet all the requirements (i.e., we're open to you convincing us you can do the job, even if you haven't done this before)
  • Have a demonstrated ability to take on a complex project without an obvious roadmap and make it successful
  • Are passionate about building inclusive, active communities
  • Believe that technology can be a powerful force for social good
  • Know that you can make a difference

Perks:

  • Competitive salary, benefits, and equity
  • Live your values, work at a mission-driven company
  • A seat at the table
  • Flexible work hours
